I've been watching you all of these years from the corner near the air vent. I just want to touch you, I’ve been holding back for all of these years until you’re at the peak of ripeness. But I've been here longer since a time before dreams. That you’ve bought safety- that you deserve it.
I know, you've thought that this was your home for quite some time now. I can get rather close to your face before you wake. I want to capture everything to relive when you’re away in the day. I'll stand there and watch as you sleep, my eyes will never close for you. As if that affords you any protection from the things that I can do.
Just like a child you’ll make sure that your feet are tucked in tight. You'll dismiss my call as a voice in your head, as you have since you were five. It all depends on what your mind perceives in the dark. Maybe I skitter or slither or crawl on bent, unnatural angles. Perhaps I am spindly tall, or a small child, or perhaps I am the size of a mouse. I prefer to smell like nothing at all so I can be closer for longer. Often I am associated with the smell of a rotting corpse, but I can smell like nothing at all. Some might imagine me different ways: from glowing red eyes and sharp teeth to a subdued blank stare and wide open mouth. But it’s not a familiar comfort- I make you never want to hear it again. Perhaps I’ve introduced the word into your vocabulary. You’ve heard it before, you’ve heard the same message since your childhood. Why, you’re standing stiff as a board in the door frame. Deafness answers your ears, for I won’t give you any further. Afterwards follows the all-encompassing silence in which you wait for a clue. My voice like stones on metal will whisper as you enter your dark room at night before bed.
